Marvelous
No Spoilers here!
Before I start, I’ve learned through experience that
everyone likes what they like, and people like different things. So this show may not be for you. However, it’s very much for me!
The plot to The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (on Amazon Prime) starts
out simply. A housewife in the 1950’s
decides to be a standup comic. But then
it twists and turns in unexpected ways. It’s
never boring!
The show evokes the mood of the 1950’s and 60’s in a
wonderful way. Having grown up in the
50’s and 60’s, I am a total sucker for every bit of the show. (Maybe the show
will stay on long enough to get to the 70’s! (my favorite decade)).
The elements of production design – the clothes, the settings,
the crowds, the décor of each and every room, all of the myriad props, the
colors! - are splendid. So much detail
and all of it accurate (I’m always watching for slip-ups, and haven’t seen one.)
Mrs. Maisel is a fashion maven and her clothes and look are always
put together. What will she wear
next? It’s always something delightfully
perfect. Susie, her manager, on the
other hand, has a whole butch non-invasive way of dressing, so it’s fun to see
what she wears too.
Jane Lynch gives an amazing performance as a loony and
power-mad star. The supporting cast,
particulary Midge’s parents, husband, and in-laws are impressive.
Another astonishing thing is contemplating the sheer weight
of what the show’s producer are spending.
Rumor is Amazon gave the show’s producer, Amy Sherman-Paladino, a blank
check. Judging from the many detailed crowd
scenes, they did!
So, if you are so inclined, give it a try!
Hey, Rich. My wife and I are both huge fans of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and are getting caught up on the current season. One of my biker buddies recommended it to me last year as something we would like, and he was right. The cast, writing, sets, wardrobe, etc. are all outstanding.
ReplyDeleteThanks Rich! I don't watch TV anymore, but I do have a Prime membership and have been looking for something lighthearted, entertaining and that doesn't involve politics or populism in any way. :) . I shall give it a shot thanks to your recommendation.
